Sheraldo Becker scored the opening goal and provided two assists in Mainz 05's emphatic 5-0 away victory over Hamburger SV. The striker celebrated his goal on Tuesday with a conspicuous heart gesture, which he later explained. This information comes from a report by Bild Sport.
Mainz 05 thus makes a perfect start to the new season and sits in fifth place in the Bundesliga table with four points from two games. Coach Bo Svensson's team is the only one yet to concede a goal and has a goal difference of plus five. For the next home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 12th, however, three key players will be missing: Dominik Kohr, Eric Martel, and Silas are currently sidelined.
Sheraldo Becker secured the early lead in Hamburg. Immediately after scoring, he formed a heart with his hands in front of his chest. In his subsequent comments, the attacker made clear who this was for. It was a personal dedication that went beyond mere sporting triumph. Despite his strong performance of one goal and two assists, he was not named Man of the Match, as Bild Sport noted in its BILDplus offering: "Wem dieser Jubel galt und warum Becker trotzdem nicht Spieler des Spiels wurde, lesen Sie mit BILDplus."
The match in Hamburg turned into a convincing demonstration of Mainz's strength. After Becker's early goal, the team maintained its pressure and scored four more times. The defense remained flawless, as it has in the first two matches of the season. This victory solidifies Mainz 05's excellent starting position. With this result, the club is just two points behind leaders FC Augsburg.
For the important home game this weekend, coach Bo Svensson will be without several regulars. The absence of Dominik Kohr in defensive midfield is a noticeable loss. Central midfielder Eric Martel is also out, while winger Silas would offer further options in attack. Their returns are planned for the coming weeks, but the squad must first cover these gaps. Exact return dates are noted on the club's squad overview.
The focus now shifts entirely to the home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 12th. Frankfurt currently sits in 13th place and will be a demanding opponent. For Mainz 05, the task is to continue the positive run of one win and one draw and keep pace with the leading group. All upcoming fixtures for the Carnival Club can be tracked in the official schedule. The match against Frankfurt at the Mewa Arena kicks off on Saturday afternoon.
