Mainz 05's second team secured an important away victory in the Regionalliga Südwest this weekend. Coach Benjamin Hoffmann's side won 2:1 at Stuttgarter Kickers.
The visitors from Mainz took an early lead and managed to defend it until the final whistle despite a temporary equalizer. The win solidifies the U23's position in the table and provides momentum for the upcoming challenges. Meanwhile, Mainz 05's first team has started the new Bundesliga season strongly, sitting in fifth place with four points from two games. With five goals scored and none conceded, the first team currently has the league's best defensive record.
The match last Saturday developed in Mainz's favor from the start. They took the initiative and scored the opening goal still in the first half. Stuttgarter Kickers managed to equalize after the break, but the visitors' response was not long in coming. Shortly afterwards, Mainz 05 II scored the decisive goal to make it 2:1. The defense secured the narrow result in the remaining minutes. Coach Benjamin Hoffmann was pleased with his players' attitude. "The lads really deserved the win," Hoffmann said after the match.
The three points against a direct competitor are highly significant for Mainz 05's reserve team. Every point counts in the tight midfield of the Regionalliga Südwest. The success boosts the confidence of the young squad, which is composed of talents from the club's academy. In parallel, the first team is fighting for top positions in the Bundesliga and trails league leaders FC Augsburg by just two points. The current form of the pros, documented in the standings, also sets a benchmark for the youth players.
The U23 must carry the momentum from this win into their next fixture. For the Bundesliga side, an important home game is coming up next weekend. On September 12, Mainz 05 hosts league rival Eintracht Frankfurt. Frankfurt currently sits in 13th place. This duel is the next test for Mainz's sturdy defense. All upcoming fixtures for both teams can be found on the fixtures page. Preparation for the home game against Frankfurt begins on Monday at the training ground on Bruchweg.
