Mainz 05 delivered a stunning 5-0 away victory over Hamburger SV on the second matchday of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season. The performance at the Volksparkstadion lifted Urs Fischer's side to four points in the league.
The Nullfünfer had opened the campaign with a goalless draw against SC Paderborn. Head coach Fischer made three changes to his lineup in response. Stefan Posch and Kacper Potulski came into the back three, while Alexander Schwolow replaced the injured first-choice goalkeeper Robin Zentner, who was ruled out with a thigh problem. The adjustments worked perfectly, as Mainz conceded just one clear goalscoring opportunity across the opening 180 Bundesliga minutes of the season.
Sheraldo Becker opened the scoring in the 19th minute following a pass from Kaishu Sano. The forward then provided the assist for Phillip Mwene's goal shortly before halftime. Less than three minutes after the restart, Becker was the provider again, this time for Phillip Tietz. The striker later added a second goal in the 83rd minute after a one-two with Jae-sung Lee. Substitute Ransford Königsdörffer netted in stoppage time to complete the rout. Becker had been replaced in the 68th minute.
The attack was clinical. After two matches, Mainz 05 have a goal difference of 5:0. This leaves them in 12th place in the table, but they have a game in hand on many rivals and took just one point from their opener. In the title race, they currently trail leaders SC Freiburg by five points.
Several players who were instrumental in last season's relegation battle were key again in Hamburg. Phillip Tietz, acquired from FC Augsburg for around €4m during that fight, scored twice. Stefan Posch, who initially joined on loan before being signed permanently for a similar fee, made his first league start since his permanent move. The Austrian international solidified the defense. Manager Urs Fischer remarked on the team's display: "That's precisely what one expects. For principles, one expects the lads to succeed irrespective of who precisely is lining up."
Alexander Schwolow made his first Bundesliga appearance of the season. The goalkeeper had a quiet afternoon. Fischer explained his decision to substitute Becker early, saying, "I thought I'd better bring him in earlier than necessary than later."
The team now turns its attention to the next home fixture. On September 12, 2026, Mainz 05 host Eintracht Frankfurt, who currently sit 11th in the table. All upcoming matches can be found on the fixtures page. Before the season, Fischer's side went unbeaten in preseason. The squad's depth was examined in a Bundesliga preview, which also covered the acquisition of Posch and Becker's reunion with Fischer, having previously worked together at Union Berlin. The club also decided to retain Kaishu Sano on transfer deadline day. The next home game against Frankfurt is scheduled for September 12.
