Marco Richter is now a free agent after leaving Mainz 05. The attacking midfielder and the Bundesliga club agreed to an early termination of his contract this week, even though Richter remains part of the squad for now.

Richter was originally under contract with Mainz until the summer of 2027. In a joint discussion with sporting director Niko Bungert, the path for a transfer has now been cleared. "We had developed a plan with Marco in recent weeks through mutual exchange that he would take on a new sporting challenge." said Bungert. Richter waived parts of his salary in the process.

The contract termination was completed in time before the end of the summer transfer window on September 1st. This has a key consequence: Marco Richter can now register as a free agent with any club in the world, even outside the official transfer periods. Interested clubs also do not have to pay a transfer fee, as the player is available for free.

Richter moved from Hertha BSC to Mainz 05 in the summer of 2023 for a transfer fee of three million euros. In the following two seasons, however, he was loaned out to clubs in the 2. Bundesliga. First he played for Hamburger SV, and last season he was active for SV Darmstadt 98. In these 57 appearances for the two clubs, the midfielder was involved in 15 goals.

Under coach Urs Fischer, Mainz 05 started the new Bundesliga season with a draw and occupies tenth place in the table after one match. The record shows a goalless draw, zero goals scored and zero conceded. In the table, Mainz are therefore two points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

The Mainz 05 squad offers several options in attack. Richter's early departure may create financial room for other projects. His place in the team structure now needs to be filled.

Marco Richter has extensive Bundesliga experience. In total, he made 176 appearances in the top German division, split between spells at Hertha BSC, FC Augsburg and Mainz 05. In these matches, he was involved in 43 goals. At 28 years old, the midfielder is in the prime of his footballing career and is now looking for a new sporting perspective.

The unusual situation of a player without a contract continuing to participate in team training shows the amicable nature of the separation. It allows Richter to maintain his fitness while looking for a new employer. For Mainz 05, this ends a chapter that did not bear the hoped-for sporting fruits.

The next sporting challenge is already awaiting next weekend. Mainz 05 will play away at Hamburger SV on September 6, 2026. HSV is currently in 14th place in the 2. Bundesliga. This friendly match gives coach Urs Fischer the opportunity to test various formations. All upcoming fixtures are listed in our fixtures overview. The duel against HSV is special because Richter was on loan to this club in the 2024/25 season.
