Mainz 05 have terminated the contract of Marco Richter. The 28-year-old attacking player is now free to join a new club despite the transfer window being closed.
The club used a specific legal mechanism, which was clarified with the German Football League (DFL) beforehand. The move allows Richter to continue his career without being bound by the official transfer deadline. For Mainz 05, the decision represents a squad adjustment as the team sits in 10th place in the Bundesliga table with one point from one match.
The contract termination is not a standard procedure. Mainz 05 applied a specific clause that permits a player to change clubs even after the transfer deadline has passed. The club coordinated the use of this regulation with the league association in advance. Such constructs are rare but are used to offer players a new perspective when they no longer feature in the club's sporting plans. For Richter, this opens the market even though the summer window is shut.
Marco Richter is now free of contractual obligations to Mainz 05. The 28-year-old can immediately negotiate a move with clubs from around the world. His profile as an experienced Bundesliga player makes him an attractive option for many teams. Richter had not made an appearance for Mainz 05 this season. The team has yet to score or concede a goal in the Bundesliga but is already two points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
The contract termination with Richter is one of several personnel decisions at Mainz. The 05ers have one point after the first matchday of the season and are positioned in the middle of the table. The next challenge is an away fixture against Hamburger SV on September 6th, with HSV currently in 14th place. The full schedule can be checked on our fixtures page.
Marco Richter's departure creates space in the Mainz 05 squad. Manager Bo Svensson now has a smaller selection of attacking options. The team will have to manage without the experienced player in the coming weeks. This could open the door for more playing time for younger talents. The current team composition is documented on our squad overview. The focus now shifts entirely to the next league game in Hamburg.
