Mainz 05 is on the verge of a breakthrough in negotiations for Stefan Posch. After weeks of talks with Como Calcio, an agreement over the return of the loan player seems within reach. The Austrian international, who spent last season on loan at Mainz, could soon join the club permanently. Mainz finished last season in 9th place in the Bundesliga with 33 points from 29 games (8 wins, 9 draws, 12 losses).
What is the current status of the negotiations?
Italian transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà reports that Mainz 05 has sent an improved offer to Como Calcio. The 26-year-old Posch is still under contract with Como until 2029, but Mainz wants to sign him permanently. In the summer of 2025, Como Calcio paid €5.5 million to FC Bologna for Posch, and now a similar transfer fee is being discussed. Both clubs are much closer to an agreement.
Why is Posch so important for Mainz 05?
Sports director Christian Heidel has already spoken positively about keeping the versatile defender. “We are totally satisfied with Poschi; we have clearly stated that we want to continue with him,” Heidel said after the season ended. Posch himself has expressed his desire to return to the Bundesliga with Mainz long-term. Last season, he was a key part of the team, which scored 35 goals and conceded 44 (-9 goal difference).
What’s next?
Mainz 05 aims to finalize the transfer as soon as possible before the new season starts. The next match for the 05ers is on February 6, 2027, against Eintracht Frankfurt (away). If the transfer goes through, Posch will play a crucial role in the team’s defense.
