Fabio Gruber has made a confident Bundesliga debut for Mainz 05 and now looks ahead to the top clash against Hamburger SV. The 24-year-old centre-back, signed from 1. FC Nürnberg, started in the back three on the opening day against SC Paderborn and impressed with strong defensive numbers. The club announced this on 4 September 2026. Mainz 05 sit fifth in the table with four points from two games and have yet to concede a goal this season.
Fabio Gruber was immediately called into the Mainz starting eleven and formed the central element of the three-man defence. In the goalless opening match, the defender won 53 percent of his ground duels and 56 percent of his aerial duels. The new signing thus provided a solid foundation for the team's flawless defensive record so far, having scored five goals and conceded none this season. The team's current form of one win and one draw (WD) shows the positive start. A full overview of the team statistics can be found on our stats page.
The Munich-born player describes himself as a quiet character. After initially living in a hotel for a month, Fabio Gruber has now found an apartment in Mainz and feels at home in the Rhine-Main region. At his previous clubs SC Verl and 1. FC Nürnberg, the defender wore the captain's armband, indicating his leadership qualities. His first start for Nürnberg dates back to April 2025, when he faced Hamburger SV and had Ransford Königsdörffer as his direct opponent.
On Sunday, Mainz 05 will face Hamburger SV at the Volksparkstadion. The stadium will be sold out with almost 60,000 spectators. For Fabio Gruber, such atmospheric occasions are nothing new. He has already experienced electrifying atmospheres in Nürnberg, at Schalke and in Dresden in the second division. "This is what football is all about," Gruber said about such moments. Preparation for this match is taking place under difficult circumstances, however, as five key players - Dominik Kohr, Eric Martel, Robin Zentner, Silas and Silvan Widmer - are injured. We keep track of the current personnel situation on our injuries page.
Immediately after the trip north, Mainz 05 will host Eintracht Frankfurt at the MEWA ARENA on 12 September. Frankfurt are currently in 13th place. This derby is the next piece in a demanding start to the season. Coach Bo Svensson's team wants to continue its positive run and keep pace with the top of the table. Trailing leaders FC Augsburg by just two points, anything is possible. The return match against HSV in Mainz is scheduled for 14 March 2027.
