FSV Mainz 05 made history on Thursday night, securing their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-finals. Urs Fischer's Rheinhessen defeated visiting SK Sigma Olomouc with a 2-0 aggregate score in the Round-of-16, marking a historic achievement for the club and German football.
This success is particularly notable as FSV Mainz 05 was already considered the most successful Bundesliga club in the five-year history of the UECL, having been the first German team to reach the Round-of-16 phase. Eintracht Frankfurt (2023/24) and 1. FC Heidenheim (2024/25) had previously competed in the playoff round but both lost. Concurrently, SC Freiburg also boosted the Bundesrepublik's standing by advancing to the Europa League quarters.
Prior to the match, Mainz faced a setback with the horror injury suffered by attacker Silas. This opened up a rare starting opportunity for the underutilized German striker Nelson Weiper in the offensive lineup.
The first half saw several promising chances for the home side, though they remained unconverted. Nelson Weiper and Phillip Tietz managed to create early opportunities on goal, but neither FSV attacker truly threatened. Tietz waited a tad too long to shoot in the 6th minute, and four minutes later, Weiper could only manage a soft header directly at goalkeeper Jan Kourtney.
Highly scrutinized attacker Paul Nebel also skied an excellent chance over in the 18th minute following some nice combination work from his teammates. Despite the missed opportunities in the first half, FSV Mainz 05 managed to control the game and secure the decisive victory that propelled them into the next round.
