Mainz 05 started the Bundesliga season with a disappointing goalless draw against newly-promoted SC Paderborn. Five Mainz professionals received a poor grade of 5 for their performance on Saturday.
The match at the home Mewa Arena proved sobering for Mainz. After a strong pre-season and a commanding cup win, many fans expected a convincing start. But against the freshly promoted opponent, the team lacked penetration and precision in front of goal. Mainz had 13 corner kicks but failed to convert a single one. Several big chances were also wasted, leading coach Urs Fischer to state after the match: "We didn't take our clear situations."
The analysis was harsh on several key players. In total, five players received the low grade of 5. The lack of efficiency in attack was particularly noticeable, with the usually clinical forwards missing their form. The midfield also lacked creative sparks to regularly break down Paderborn's compact defence. The back line stood firm but couldn't compensate for the missing goals up front.
Despite the disappointing point share, the Swiss coach was not completely dissatisfied. "I'm not unhappy with the performance, but with the result," Fischer said. He pointed to the created chances and his team's defensive stability. However, the lack of composure in decisive moments needs to improve quickly, especially given the tight schedule. The next opportunity comes this Saturday in the away match at VfB Stuttgart.
The focus now shifts fully to preparing for the first away game. Urs Fischer's team goes into the international break with one point from one match, increasing the pressure for the upcoming fixtures. Within the Mainz 05 squad, which you can view here, work on chance conversion will certainly be a priority in training. The next match on matchday two takes place on Saturday, 19 September 2026, at 15:30 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
