Andreas Hanche-Olsen has left 1. FSV Mainz 05 and is moving to Major League Soccer. The 29-year-old Norwegian central defender signed a contract with Chicago Fire FC running until 2027 after being omitted from the Bundesliga squad at Mainz.

The departure comes as Mainz 05 sits in tenth place in the Bundesliga with one point after the first matchday of the 2026/27 season. The team opened with a draw and is now two points behind leaders Bayern Munich. The next challenge is an away fixture against 14th-placed Hamburger SV on September 6.

Andreas Hanche-Olsen arrived at the Bruchweg from Belgian club KAA Gent in the winter of the 2022/23 season. Over three and a half years, the Norwegian made a total of 77 competitive appearances for Mainz 05. Sporting director Niko Bungert acknowledged the departure of the international. "Andreas is a role model professional and was always very popular within the team and the entire club," Bungert said. "We are very grateful for his commitment over the past three and a half years, during which we could always rely on him."

The transfer was facilitated following talks between the club and the player. "After good mutual discussions, we agreed to the move and wish Andreas only the best for his sporting and private future in the USA," the sporting director added. Hanche-Olsen, who has 22 caps for Norway, was no longer part of coach Bo Svensson's sporting plans. The current injury list, which can be viewed on our injuries page, includes Benedict Hollerbach, Dominik Kohr, Eric Martel, and Silas.

The Nullfünfer started the new campaign with a draw and have yet to score or concede a goal. Their record from one game reads zero wins, one draw, and zero losses. The full table and further statistics are available on our Bundesliga standings page. The focus now shifts entirely to preparing for the away game in Hamburg. A look at the fixtures schedule shows that after the HSV match, the Bundesliga challenges continue.

The defender was considered a reliable performer in central defense. His 77 appearances were spread across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and the relegation play-offs. His departure now creates space and potential financial flexibility within the squad. Mainz 05 must compensate for the exits while injury concerns in midfield and attack persist. The current squad composition is documented on our team page.

Andreas Hanche-Olsen ends his chapter in Mainz with a contract in Chicago that runs for four years until 2027.
